Men in Action

Men in Action

ALL HANDS ON DECK to help a member in need.  Jimmy Strickland spotted a problem during a recent visit to our long-time member Gary Andrews.  Gary’s recent loss of his wife, Connie, and health issues left his yard in need of some tender loving care.  Gary and Connie were long time supporters of the Norfolk Church and were always ready to jump in to tackle a project.  Gary and Connie were always ready to help and work at our church and Connie spent countless hours supporting Creative Global Relief efforts in Malawi making book bags for children.  With all those times Gary and Connie gave of themselves it was now time for us to give back.  Jimmy contacted Jay Douglas, our Men’s Ministry Leader, and the word was sent out “all men mobilize for action.”  Sunday morning the team went into action armed with chain saws, hedge trimmers, rakes, a tractor, and plenty of good-natured banter.  Destruction and hilarity ensued.

Pastor Boyd spent time with Gary sharing past stories and boosting Gary’s spirits.  Soon Gary was outside supervising from his chair and overseeing our efforts.  During a doughnut break, Pastor Boyd and Jimmy recounted some of Gary’s work bee efforts at our church.  Gary, a man of few words, when told of a need or a call to action would simply reply “OooKayyy” as all that was necessary to get moving.

With the loss of Connie, it is an emotionally difficult time for Gary and his family, but being remembered by their extended church family helps to ease that pain.   If you would like to further acknowledge Connie’s lifetime service, the family requested donations be made to Creative Global Relief in support of continued efforts in Malawi.

Wrapping up at the end of the work bee we paused for a couple of minutes to reflect on the day.  The air was cool and super fresh and we all had another doughnut, this had been a good day.  We talked about how great it was to just be outside enjoying each other’s company and helping a friend in need.  Jimmy simply said, “this is church” and no truer words were ever spoken.

Under the leadership of Jay, Men’s Ministry is running strong.  Don’t miss out on the action and comradery.  Contact Jay Douglas to make sure you are on the team.
